I really have to wonder how some people managed to get into a university. Apparently the requirements to graduate from high school don’t include even the most rudimentary of English skills anymore.

People use the internet to communicate, even if it is not up to your standard. The first post appears to be written by someone who is new to English, imagine using the internet to communicate with people outside of your native language, the nerve! The second poster was obviously using slang and honestly it was just enough to make her site a little more personable, add a little more flava, sorry everybody isn’t vanilla. Some people use language and the internet to belittle people. Hail the internet high horse.

USF doesn’t have the highest standards. I was admitted with a 3.4 GPA with no questions asked, nor essays written.
I agree with Showna, that if you are writing outside your native language you have reasons to make mistakes. My Norwegian and Spanish are both abisymall butt iff U speek inglesh neightively U shuld possst soomewat cohearently.

I completely agree with you here. Even in the last decade there has been a very sharp decline in schools expectations regarding ‘rudimentary’ skills such as basic English, arithmetic, and others.
While there are no limits placed on blogging or bloggers regarding what they can and cannot write about… I think all bloggers should use a measure of tact in what they choose to write about.. considering their ability to convey their message. While I think your disdain is greater than mine sir, I completely share your sentiments.

I’ve been blogging about Alpharetta Real Estate (that’s in Georgia ;->) for over a year now. When reading other blogs they are mostly real estate related, but i am amazed at how poorly written most of them are, how shabby the attention is to grammar and punctuation and how thin the analysis is of the topic on which you are writing. For business blogging, if you are not at least professional enough to spell check your blog posts then how can you expect anyone in your readership to respect you enough to want to do business with your? If you are blogging for a living you had better pay attention to what you are doing. Real estate transactions are major decisions and people are entrusting you with a lot of responsibility - so many real estate blogs that I read are so poor that the agent is probably doing himself more harm than good.

Unfortunately, I agree with you on this matter, the American school system is one of the most dysfunctional in the entire world. Here is the irony behind everything, we are ranked in the 100’s when it comes to education and we are a first world nation, however there are third world nations and second world nations that have better schooling systems than us. It all comes down to priority, America needs to do a better job of educating our young ones and providing the education this country should provide!

There is certainly a skill in writing and most often it is not self taught. I have enjoyed blggging about Real Estate in my local market of Hopkinton Massachusetts. I would by no means classify myself as a great writer. Sometimes you can get by with decent grammer but intereting content. It is easy to see through someone that doesn’t know what they are talking about when it comes to Real Estate.

People who use blogging for their profession these days can’t afford to appear illiterate if they want people to take them seriously. Many businesses today use blogs to reach their customers, as I do for my Colorado Springs real estate business, and in my field a persons writing capability can tell a lot about their attention to detail in other aspects of their work.

I do agree that people are not educated very well these days in public schools but as far as blogging goes, I don’t think it is vital to be perfect with English. In fact, blogging is more like a discussion and sheds light on the author’s personality…blogs can’t be written like an english paper but instead are written in the author’s words which can often be very informal.

Part of the reason for the poor use of the English language in blogs is due to many of us writing to our blog off the top of our heads and trying to multi-task. If you look at compositions from high school students you will notice the use of shorthand used via IM’s or in posts. This might not be a benefit of the Internet - but in fact a down side.

There have been many occasions where I have completely stopped reading an article midstream for no other reason than I just couldn’t take the butchering of the English language anymore. I sell East Tennessee Real Estate and have a blog in which I discuss many things related to my area. I rely on that blog to drive me traffic and eventually put food on my table. What person would have any faith in my abilities if I couldn’t even spell properly.

I am in agreement. I write a column for a local paper. The comments are quite remarkable. I cringe when I read a few of them.

It is true that many have very rudimentary skills at best. I am a high school graduate and had no idea that blogging was any more that kid’s way to communicate. When I realize the power of blogging after joining Active Rain just over a year ago I began writing and people started paying attention. I am now concerned one of the most read bloggers on Active Rain. What I love about blogging is that it allows people who normally would never be heard of to express thier opinions, views, and to just tell thier story. These are great times in the respect that anyone can be heard and someone, even if only one person out there cares about what we have to say.

It’s amazing to see the quantity of misspelled words in the content that’s on websites and blogs. We rely on spell checkers but apparently a lot of people can not even be bothered with that. Where’s all the professionalism gone?

They probably made it through on a sports scholarship or something. But yeah it is pretty sad to see just how illiterate some of these people are. LOL. But hey once they finish school they can get their real estate license.

I have a few suggestions for successful blogging, including:
1. Consistency. Write regularly and breathe life into your blog. It will need it.
2. Read other blogs and comment. Others will come visit you.
3. Keep a camera handy, take interesting shots, and add those to your blog as well.
4. Install Akismet or some other spam filter on your blog to block undesirable company.

I also failed to add in the statement above that a blog can be either a very personal diary (you are writing for yourself, not an audience)–or a business tool that attracts more clients. In the latter case, you write articles that will be of interest to your readership.

I’ve been working pretty hard at becoming a better blogger, but it has been a tough road. How do you guys come up with your topics. Do you scan the newspapers on a daily basis, watch the news, cruise the internet??
I think my problem is I don’t just like to blog to blog. I wait until I find something that is not already all over the net which keeps my blog post to a minimum.

I find that blogs are good for anyone who has a particular interest, regardless of their writing skills. Writing only gets better with practice, and knowledge on a particular topic.

Hi! It varies from person to person and totally on someone’s personal choice we are no one to raise finger on some one whether he or she can or cannot write properly. But i think blogging does help someone interacting with different kinds of subjects and one can get to know loads of interesting things by going through an informative and interesting articles. Now something which i would have asked is if someone cannot comment properly then please don’t spam you are always free to comment but your answer should pertain with the topic.

Of course. Education at all levels in the United States has reached the crisis stage. Of course, the situation didn’t arise yesterday; it has developed over a period of decades. Nor is the crisis news to people who have been paying attention to what’s been going on in the country.

As a former educator (actually an English teacher) who is still somewhat new to blogging I do understand that thought process. I have a friend who is also a blogger who chastised me when I told him (privately) that he had some typos. I was told that blogs were informal and that some mistakes were allowable. While I know I have probably made some in my blogging, it still bothers me to see to many mistakes.
